Power supplies? Yes, thank you!

The first time I used a regulated power supply was when I was working in Africa because I needed to convert the voltage from the wall outlet to a different lower voltage.  It is really a useful device that controls the output voltage or current to a specific value but it can also convert one form of electrical energy to another.

Of course a power supply needs energy to work. It can obtain energy from:

1. Electrical energy transmission systems.
2. Energy storage devices like batteries and fuel cells.
3. Electromechanical systems like  generators and alternator
4. Solar power

A power supply can stand alone, be implemented as a discrete or be an integral device.

When you want to buy a power supply you have to check its attributes that include:

• amount of voltage and current it can supply to its load.
• Stability of its output voltage
• time it can work without refuelling or  recharging

Power Supplies can be divided in:
line-frequency (or "conventional"): that normally has a  simple design but it can become heavy and bulky for high-current equipment:

1. BATTERY: this device is able to converts stored chemical energy in electrical energy. It is the most common power supplies on the market and often used in many household and industrial application.
2. DC power Supply: it is used to convert the voltage from the wall outlet to a different lower voltage.
3. AC power supply:  is used to convert the voltage from the wall outlet to the desired voltage.
4. and switching power supplies that are smaller, more efficient but often more complex. Normally it has also a  safety feature like current limiting or a crowbar circuit to help protect the device and the user from harm
