4x4 tyres, what a discovery!

My wife and I are fond of travels, in particular of safaris.
We would like to visit a place with a new suitable car. To fulfil our dream I have decided to look for some info about four-wheel drives.
Do you know what does "4x4" mean? The first figure is the total number of wheels and the second the number of powered wheels. They are vehicles equipped with a drive train that allows all four wheels to receive torque from the engine simultaneously.

Powering all four wheels provides better control in normal road cars on many surfaces. The true inventor of four-wheel drive is not really known. Ferdinand Porsche designed and built a four-wheel driven electric vehicle in Vienna in 1899, presented to the public during the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris. Daimler-Benz also has an history in four-wheel drive. Mercedes and BMW, in 1926, introduced a rather sophisticated four-wheel drive. Afterwards, Land Rover developed a luxury 4WD with the Range Rover in the 1970s and Kaiser Jeep introduced a 4WD wagon in 1963. Audi also introduced a permanently all-wheel driven road-going car, the Audi Quattro in 1980.  In 1987, Toyota also developed a car built for competition in rally campaigns, such as Toyota Corolla. Such a vehicle was revolutionary at the time, because of its technical innovations and because it was equipped and finished as a regular passenger automobile.

Today, sophisticated all-wheel drive systems are found in many passenger vehicles and some exotic sports car and supercars.
While getting some info about 4x4 vehicle I was struck by an interesting advertisement."Win a trekking holiday to the Usa". To celebrate Jeep becoming the official vehicle supplier for Horse of the Year Show, anyone who test drives a Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicle will be entered into a prize draw to win a fantastic trekking holiday for two in Arizona, USA. The winner will enjoy an all-inclusive seven night stay at the Tanque Verde resort ranch in Arizona.

I think it's a great chance to buy a 4x4 vehicle, don't' you?
